Thank You Terrapin Nation

Post by KEZHEAD » Mon Feb 10, 2020 11:57 pm

For allowing me to speak my mind freely
I wouldn’t ever say this on .org
The folks around here seem to be more understanding and open in conversation
It’s been a big transition moving in with my mom
Alzheimer’s/Dementia is hard on both the person and family
I used to work at a nursing home years ago as an orderly for a yr and a half
Changing diapers, feeding people, giving them showers, getting them dressed for the day
Never even giving a single thought to that ailment on their brains
Seeing it up close and how it affects the day to day, minute to minute daily routine of their lives is frightening at times
On that note...I’ve become somewhat good at deflecting the anger when they can’t do simple tasks
My mom became very upset when she couldn’t take the laundry from the washer and put it in the dryer
F bombs were flying out of her mouth like verbal vomit 🤮
I stepped in and calmed her down
Finished that task at hand and then moved on to the next outburst
Again another simple task she couldn’t physically preform
She is a clean freak (not that there is any wrong with that)
Dusting the floors, cleaning the bathroom and doing the dishes
She got anger at herself because couldn’t do them
I stepped in and defused that one as well
My best advice is to be very patient
When it comes to cooking my mom is a champion
On friday and saturday we cooked two banana bread cakes for one of her homecare nurses
She was spot on, getting all the ingredients measured properly and all lined up before mixing them together
Oven set to 350 degrees, timer set for 40 minutes
Best part is licking the beaters and the bowl like when I was a young buck
Again be patient
They teach, we learn
I heard this in the past
You’re a child twice and an adult once :think

Thank you again Terrapin Nation :grouphug

Enjoy your time together and remain patient. It is difficult at times but those struggles will be overshadowed when you look back at the blessings of the good moments.

There's nothing more difficult to navigate than aging parents issues, you've got all my sympathy, Kezhead!! Though your Mom sure seems to be in good hands with you, the baking this weekend sounds like wonderful time spent together! Just remember to keep taking care of yourself while you're taking care of her. :sunshine :bigheart

Kez, very inspirational post. Especially for those who are or may some day have to deal with the trials and tribulations of age in this crazy world.

You’re a child twice and an adult once :think

we have said this when we dealt with my mom with Alzheimer’s/Dementia & now in round 2 with my mother in law - although she is in assisted living now it still takes a toll on us, my wife more than I but yes it takes its toll on the family

that is so true about them reverting back to children...at times a 5 year old girl...other times perhaps more like a 12 yr old cuz there is a a little more scheming going on

Hang in there Keri & please know that you are doin the right thing...to help your mom

and as sue said enjoy the fun times like the cooking cuz 1 day that is all that you will have to remember - and I know as it is coming up on 3 years of my mom being gone...

Before my Dad passed, we were trying to get him to stop driving, but he would have none of it. One day I go to see my father I notice a scrape along the entire right side of his car so I ask him what happened? He says he has no idea whatsoever, denied like a kid who just broke a vase. Two weeks later he gives up his keys.

Hang in there Kezhead, you are doing good work.

Today was a good day
No major breakouts of anger
My mother doesn’t drive anymore dr bakes
She won’t even try it again because she knows how dangerous It is for her
I wish some warmer weather would come by soon so I could take her for a walk outside
She uses a cane and a walker but there’s nothing like the freedom of breathing gods fresh air
She is a prisoner to the four walls inside of this house she has told me
I won’t go deep into the story but we have an appointment tomorrow with an attorney
So I will drive her to and from and even stop in to giant Food market so she can spend an hour in the produce section
If you’ve ever noticed that every food store you went to the produce section is the first you enter, it’s the building blocks of a great meal

The meeting with the attorney went really well
My mom got really nervous in the car
Kerry there’s a red light and or a stop sign
Mom I see them don’t worry

When my Mom was first starting to slip into dementia, she was still living at home alone. Knowing she was past the point of being able to drive safely, I kept both sets of keys to her car at my house.
More than once, I stopped by for a visit & she would tell me how she went for a lovely drive that day & about all the places she went.
I just smiled & nodded.
