We had this discussion/argument/debate in line for Phish in Pittsburgh with all the other fans waiting. It was fun, entertaining and great to hear everybodys opinions. Sorry if this has been beat to death before. :jester

I voted for Brent because he was on keys when I saw most of my dead shows
If I go from the bottom up
Vince
Tom
Pig
Keith and Brent.....I had to flip a coin

You should’ve put Bruce in that poll question

I voted Keith because the sound of a piano really adds something classic to the band.

But, damn if it doesn't hurt not to pick Pigpen or Brent. Pigpen was the original leader of the band and I'm a blues fan. Brent's vocal intensity could really send a song.

I'll also add that I've recently begun to fix myself of the bias towards Vince. That poor guy caught a lot of flack from some Heads but Jerry really fed off his keys. Plus, as the band had gotten older by that point, he added some much needed vocal energy.
Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul.

Didnt consider Bruce really (only played 100 or so shows and not never fully commited to the band, but just to help/fill in), but true - next time! :thumbsup

I love Pigpens voice/harmonica playing. Keyboard, ehhhhh --- certain times its pretty psychadelic and great, others, its missing completely.

But keyboard wise, its down to Brent or Keith. Keith pre-78 is pretty amazing and I thank him for taking Donna's bellowing with them after they both departed.

But I really love the total package of Brent. My humble (and most likely wrong) opinion! :smileys-passing-joint

Kieth
Pigpen
Brent
Vince
Tom
If you get confused listen to the music play.

Yes, keys specific I would say Keith and then Brent. My fave part about Pig was the harmonica, really.

I agree with you but Brent could reproduce those same effects with his rig
Plus the boys never let/or needed Keith to sing

Man, this is hard for me to answer. Are we talking about keyboard playing or favorite member of the band who played keys? I love Brent, Keith, and Pig all equally. Then TC, then Vince. They all bring such a unique sound to the Dead. All of their era's are so different sounding, which is completely attributed to them. Although his keys playing isn't the strongest of the folks on this list, Pig's vocal contributions are the best. Plus he was the band's frontman at its beginning. Because of this he gets my vote.
