Dead-A-Day: On This Day in GD-Land

Post by patchthenation » Fri Dec 29, 2017 10:14 am

Along the lines of Dark Star Daily, this post is meant to highlight shows/performances daily (as possible).

The goal of this thread is to highlight - via Youtube links, Archive, reviews, etc. - performances or full shows from any band in GD-Land: The GOGD, JGB, Legion of Mary, Ratdog, Phil and Friends, Mickey Hart Band(s), Trichromes, Billy and the Kids, Other Ones, Furthur, DeadCo, "The Dead", Terrapin Family Band, solo shows, etc.

Feel free to post as many shows per day as you wish!

Have fun! Can't wait to see what we have in store!
We will get by, we will survive!

To kick things off, 12/29/77!

Released as Dick's Picks 10, many know this show to be the return of China Cat - and many rave about it! Also check out the Terrapin encore.

Bonnie Raitt played on Big Boss Man. She opened that night. Hot slide. She gave Jerry a big kiss on the cheek before she left the stage.

My one and only GD New Years run, 1989 had been such a great year for the Band I felt that I had to make the trip. GD New Years is like Mecca for Muslims, flying in to SF we had probably a 1/3 of the plane all Deadheads. 4 shows in 5 days and I went with zero tickets, but friends of mine had extras for the first 3 nights and had this idea that they would trade all 3 tickets for 1 New Years which never happened so I got them. The first night with Clarence Clemons was probably the best show of the run, loved the second set closer DEW! We stayed in Santa Rosa, north of Oakland at my friend Kaya's aunt and uncles house who happened to be on vacation that week. The 3rd night was very solid as well, but all eyes were on the 31st. I knew this was going to be one tough ticket, my friend Matt thought walking over to the BART station would help getting one and ended up getting robbed instead. There were people walking around the lot one oz plant tops "trade for your extra". I run into this guy who doesn't look like much of a Head and we start talking about what prices we have heard and I tell him I saw one go for $90 and he says would you pay that? I said Fu*k yea. He had won a ticket through a radio contest, the tix said Complimentary on the back and bam I was in. I missed Bonnie Raitt's set but managed to get in front of the sound board. Bonnie Raitt comes out and plays blistering slide on Big Boss Man. At Midnight Bill Graham comes flying out on a big disco ball throwing out roses. They sorta do 3 sets but like many "Big" shows the playing doesn't live up to the expectations. A lot of fun and pomp, we get home at like 3:30 exhausted and ready to drive to Tahoe the next day for skiing. I love California!

I was there. Sorry I didn’t run into you. I travelled quite a distance as well, but not nearly as much as you.

I always loved set 2 of 12/31/90. The radio broadcast of the shenanigans, Marsalis, trippy Other One.....yup it's all there.
