Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'

I can't think of a more fitting way to live one's life than doing what one loves and bringing it to people. I'm not in this business to make a killing and go retire in Maui or play golf for the rest of my days. I do this 'cause I have to.

Don't waste the time. Time is the final currency, man. Not money, not power - it's time.

Sometimes it's a huge amble, where you're just on top, on the lid, and it's not going anywhere, and sometimes you walk on the stage and from the first note, the afterburner kicks in and you can't stop it.

Jerry had this ineffable sweetness and vulnerability, even when he was playing his wildest up-in-the-spheres stuff. It’s something you don’t really see that often in musicians working in this field. We never really talked about this, because it was so obvious to all of us, but he knew he wasn’t making that music; it was like he was just up there quoting or transcribing what it was that was being given to him or coming through him, as we all were in the best moments. That’s the goal that we strive for, that we still strive for.

When you find yourself talking about less and less and forgetting the love that you bring, never forget there are things you can replace but others you can not.

And when one person taps out a beat, while another leads into the melody, or when three people discover a harmony they never knew existed, or a crowd joins in on a chorus as though to raise the ceiling a few feet higher, then they also know there is hope for the world.

Always show more kindness than seems necessary, because the person receiving it needs it more than you will ever know.
