I wish I was going to a Grateful Dead concert tomorrow. I wish I was dancing with my friends while we listened to Jerry and the band play. But it’s the honor of a lifetime to convert my love for this music into the further telling of this beautiful, timeless story with some of its brilliant authors. I’m like anyone else who was ever moved by this music, who was discovered by it, and not the other way around. My love for the Grateful Dead is immense, but not extraordinary. I am in that crowd, just represented from the stage. And I think of Jerry Garcia and his intentions with every song we play. I’m only there so that on my best of nights, you might get to him.

For the love of God, folks, don't try this at home.

When you’re writing a song, you’re writing something that can’t be said with words alone. Can’t be done with music alone. It takes words and music.

The real test of a musician is live performance. It's one thing to spend a long time learning how to play well in the studio, but to do it in front of people is what keeps me coming back to touring.

There's a band out on the highway
They're high steppin' into town
It's a rainbow full of sound
It's fireworks, calliopes and clowns
Everybody dancin'
Come on children, come on children
Come on clap your hands!

It could be the simplest song or it could be the hardest song — you just never know what’s going to be the strongest during any given night. You could look at a set list but once a transition happens, it’s, like, “Whoa, never saw that coming!” That’s the beauty of it — going in with an open mind and taking it night by night. And having conversations with your brothers up there — that’s really what it’s about.

I have always felt that no matter how inscrutable its ways and means, the universe is working perfectly and working according to a greater plan than we can know.

A good groove releases adrenaline in your body. You feel uplifted, you feel centered, you feel calm, you feel powerful. You feel that energy. That's what good drumming is all about.

Creativity has much to do with experience, observation and imagination, and if any one of those key elements is missing, it doesn't work.
