Mother's Day

Mother’s Day (5/9/14)

I hope you make her breakfast in bed
And set a card beside her head
Wrap your presents and hide them well
Will her eyes widen as her heart swells

Have the kids pushed painted hands onto a poster board
Did you wipe down all the counters and double mop the floors
Was it finally her turn to get jewelry from her man
Or is it a newsprint note, words written down in crayon

Reservations where they have linen table cloths
She can order anything, no matter what the cost
Or a family picnic and backyard barbecue
With a homemade chocolate cake that says, “I Love You”

Because my Mom doesn’t know that it’s Mother’s day
She doesn’t know who I am or what to say
Her world is a cold an unforgiving place
Her memory’s been scrubbed of each and every trace

Fifty three years ago today, I took my first breath
Was loved, nurtured, inspired and raised in perfect health
I remember leaping through a soaking sprinkler’s spray
That she had set out for me, one sweltering summer’s day

I raised a lot of hell, causing my fair share of tears
As I found all kinds of trouble in my rebellious years
I can only pay my penance with one act at a time
Trying to minimize the pain of a fierce and steep decline

Did you comb your hair, wash your face and iron a clean shirt
Inspect the children’s fingernails for evidence of dirt
And take a minute to think of the people that you know
Before you have to query as to where the time did go

Because my Mom doesn’t know that it’s Mother’s Day
She doesn’t know who I am or what to say
Her world is a cold an unforgiving place
Her memory’s been scrubbed of each and every trace
