R.I.P. John Perry Barlow

Post by patchthenation » Wed Feb 07, 2018 5:49 pm

Long Strange Trip director Amir Bar-Lev tweeted the news that John P. Barlow has passed away.

JPB was an intenet pioneer? Wow talk about a double life - I never even knew! https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/02/j ... -1947-2018
This life is fleeting, as we all know - the Muse we serve is not. John had a way of taking life’s most difficult things and framing them as challenges, therefore adventures. He was to be admired for that, even emulated. He’ll live on in the songs we wrote... Bob Weir (@BobWeir) https://twitter.com/BobWeir/status/961395273879769088
I only met John Barlow once, at Shoreline a year or 2 ago. He was thrilled to meet me, thinking I was Nick Meriwether. I didn't correct him. He was gracious, kind, warm, and big-hearted. His words helped form the soundtrack to my life for the past 35 years. David Lemieux (@lemieuxdavid) https://twitter.com/lemieuxdavid/status ... 0693463040

That's very sad. Thank you John for all the ways you've contributed to my life.

While it would obviously be better if he were imparting us with his wisdom and artistry, now that he's gone I hope as goes the physical person so goes his suffering. Bob Weir lost his best friend, and we all lost a sage. Mr. Barlow, thank you much for all the contributions you made. RIP

When I went out to Bobby's studio, I opened the front door and he was the first person I saw...exuberantly I said, "John", he quickly looks over and I continue, "you're the man"....he grabs my hand, shakes it and says with a gentle smile, "just one of them".
Got to talking to him that night, kind human being. Very grateful for the contribution and give a big thanks on our behalf to Jerry, Pig, Keith, Brent, Vince and the rest of the extended family up there, making music on those unstrung harps.
Rest In Peace Brother

For those interested in the life he lived you can pre order his just finished memoir: Mother American Night: My Life in Crazy Times. Due out in June

What a shock and what a loss. My sympathy is going out to those who knew him personally as well as to all of us he's affected even if we never met him. Thank you for every lyric you ever wrote, John, the Grateful Dead would not have been the same without you!!

One of my regrets is when I was a young man around 20 I was at shows in Sacramento expo I met John but I did not fully understand who I had met at that time. I remember he was upset because a stranger not of our group took a picture of us and he flipped out and took the film out of the guys camera. gave the camera back and he proceeded to buy lunch at dennys .
well he bought for a few but he got like a bunch of people to show up because at that time dennys had that if you were not served in 30 minutes it was free. so we swamped dennys with a line out the door.
rest in peace brother
