Been listening to a lot of Nils Lofgren lately...his boxed set is a piece of work.

This will likely come out of left field here, but i'm gearing up to go to Vegas in two weeks for the Punk Rock Bowling and Music Festival. Four straight days of punk music from noon to 3 a.m. in downtown Vegas, plus bowling tourney, poker tourney, films, pool parties, and stand up comedy. I've been trying to do my homework (aka listening to) on a lot of the bands with which I'm unfamiliar.

While I'm definitely a deadhead at heart, I've got a pretty wide, wide range of musical interests. What's funny is how similar I find deadheads and punks while both groups, generally (there are plenty of outliers like myself), tend to be opposed to the other.

Anyhow, while I'm gearing up for some summer concert fun with D&C, JRAD, Willie Nelson, and others, I'm starting out at a really hardcore end of the music spectrum this month. I've been to this festival before and it's an absolute riot. Nothing is more than 7 blocks away (most of it is 3 blocks away) from my hotel for a four day weekend. Nonstop fun! :rockon

The new Lindi Ortega album "Liberty" filling my office with good sound this morning. If you're unfamiliar, check her out. Young, new country musician but with a total old school sound. Sort of has a throwback Emmylou Harris or Dolly Parton vocal quality with the darkness of Johnny Cash to her tunes (which she writes). Haunting and beautiful.

Easy to forget music exists outside of the Dead world sometimes. Just discovered this masterpiece digging around through what originally led me here and digging around for some new hidden gems to fill the air.

Just discovered this band two weeks ago and now they're on NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert. Some seriously smooth and funky stuff from Khruangbin:

Fire On The Mountain - D&C 7/1/17 - Wrigley Field

Listened to an interview of John Mayer this morning from 7/16/17 on Sirius 'Tales From The Golden Road' and he talks about Oteil. He said this Fire is one of the pivotal moments in D&C where Oteil really stepped out and transformed the song in his own way.

Listening to it, it's got some real energy and pace to it. I'm so, so, SO glad Oteil has found his voice in this band (literally and figuratively). His influence going forward is going to be fantastic. He's such an amazing talent and person. Really love that he was brought into the fold in D&C. I've loved his stuff going back to the early 90s with Col Bruce & ARU.

edited to add: HOLY SMOKING FIRE, BATMAN! Can we please get more of that this summer?!
